Join us for a special dinner supporting the after school Nature & Art Explorer Program at Shadow Lake Elementary School. Because of the importance of art and the understanding of nature in the development of children's education, we are offering this FREE program to students. The Maple Valley Creative Arts Council is supporting this endeavor by partnering with Brenda Running, Nature Educator & Barb Quirie, artist and retired teacher. The goal of this important program is for students to actively and creatively engage in and appreciate the arts and the natural environment, deepening their understanding and stewardship of both. Please join us with your support. Nature & Art Explorers is being SOLELY SUPPORTED THROUGH COMMUNITY DONATIONS. Please contact us if you can't attend the dinner but would still like to support the program through a donation. Tickets may be purchased on-line at http://www.maplevalleyarts.com/content.aspx?page_id=87&club_id=181069&item_id=188628 For additional information, please contact Brenda Running, b.running@comcast.net

Our nature program strives to:
- support Tahoma School District's Classroom 10 teaching and learning philosophy (Outcomes and Indicators; 21st Century Learning and Habits of Mind) to provide quality learning every day in every classroom for every child;
- incorporate and model sustainability education throughout the campus;
- promote stewardship of place by providing opportunities for children and adults to connect with nature by developing awareness, appreciation and respect of the environment;
- foster community relationships.
The program has evolved over many years with support from the entire school community, Pacific Education Institute, Master Gardener Foundation, Washington Native Plant Society, Maple Valley Communities that Care and many other community partners.
The Discovery Gardens benefit students and the school community by providing rich opportunities to experience natural science and cultural history right outside the classroom door. Programs are designed for afterschool, individual students and class groups. Tours and activities for other community groups and Open House events are also provided.
"The gardens are truly a showcase and a wonderful opportunity for the students to experience nature in so many meaningful ways. " Nancy Skerritt, Assistant Superintendent, Tahoma School District
“Shadow Lake’s campus brings learning ALIVE for students. During these experiences students learn to appreciate, care for and protect their environment. The gardens give teachers the tools to enhance the curriculum to meet the needs of ALL learners.”
Sue Baldwin, Kindergarten teacher
